Battery Swapping Electric Scooter | Gogoro

2020 - A Year of Positive Change

Despite a year of unprecedented challenges in the modern age, Gogoro’s mission to accelerate the transition to cleaner and smarter urban transportation continued

What started in 2011 with the idea to simply reimagine the 125cc scooter, quickly evolved into a mission to transform how people consume energy and get around cities all over the world.

“The fundamentals of how people live changed in a decade with the smartphone,” said Horace Luke, founder and CEO of Gogoro Inc., in a 2015 interview with the New York Times. “If we put the same effort into how energy is consumed, how much can we change things in 10 years?”

Five years later, Gogoro’s vision for an open energy platform that any vehicle maker can seamlessly adopt has not only grown domestically but also globally. Gogoro’s innovative smart battery swapping technology and platform have proven, in just five years, that our vision for an open platform for any vehicle maker to be part of is not only scalable but desirable as well.

Here are Gogoro’s Top 8 Milestones of 2020 by the numbers:

147,000,000+
Proving just how easy and effortless Gogoro’s technologies and products are to use, over 147 million Smart Batteries have been swapped since 2015, making the Gogoro Network the biggest battery swapping platform in the world.

359,000+
In August of 2016, just over a year after the Gogoro Network and Smartscooters went on sale to the public, Gogoro celebrated its 10,000th Smartscooter sold. In 2020, the number of Gogoro Network subscribers continues to grow with over 359,000 riders, a 3,490% increase in just four years, with more joining every day.

240,000+
For much of 2020, Gogoro Network subscribers averaged over 200,000 battery swaps a day. In the last 30 days alone, Smartscooter riders have been swapping over 240,000 Smart Batteries a day.

3,500
A regular morning occurrence in Taipei, the oft buzzy scooter “waterfall” descending down the Taipei Bridge first went silent in 2016 with 300 Smartscooters. Fast forward to 2020 and this year’s quiet ride attracted over 3,500 Smartscooter owners and, at least, one Eeyo 1s owner.

And during the Gogoro Network Club's annual beach clean-up in Taiwan, over 2,200 volunteers scoured nearly 390,000 sq meters picking up 7,825 kg of garbage proving the community's commitment to a better, cleaner planet for all.

2000+

To better service Smartscooter owners wherever they might be along their ride, the Gogoro Network of battery swapping GoStations has grown to over 2,000 locations alone in Taiwan.

11.9
This year marks Gogoro’s first foray into new markets, like the US, with a wholly brand new product, the ultralight and effortless Gogoro Eeyo 1. Weighing just 11.9 kg and powered by yet another Gogoro innovation, the Eeyo Smartwheel, the Eeyo 1 is redefining what an ebike can be and is a testament to Gogoro’s commitment to deliver smarter urban mobility experiences.

The Gogoro Network was created to be a battery swapping platform that any electric vehicle maker can join if they choose. Launched in 2019, the Powered by Gogoro Network (PBGN) alliance has grown to include light electric vehicles (LEVs) from Yamaha, Aeonmotor, eReady, PGO, CMC’s eMOVING and, of course, Gogoro, with over 30 different models to choose from and more to come from even more brands.

1.2

With several hundred thousand Smart Batteries in circulation between GoStations and Smartscooters, the Gogoro Network achieved a total capacity of 1.2GWh of energy in 2020. Put another way, if Taipei City were to lose power, the Gogoro Network could, in theory, power the city of over 2.6 million inhabitants for 40 minutes.
